“I Learned How to Hurt People. Now I’m Learning How to Heal People”

Chef Reeky’s story is bigger than food. It is a story about survival, second chances, and what can happen when a man who once learned from the streets decides to use everything he survived to help save somebody else.

There are some sentences that tell you almost everything you need to know about a person’s journey.

For Tarik “Chef Reeky” Ryant, one of those sentences is simple:

“I learned how to hurt people. Now I’m learning how to heal people.”

That is not a marketing slogan.

That is a life story.

Today, many people know Chef Reeky as “The People’s Chef,” an entrepreneur and Philadelphia chef whose work has included Chef Reeky’s Café and Cheezy Vegan.

But before the restaurants, the menus, the vegan food, and the recognition, there was another education taking place.

The streets were teaching him.

And eventually, prison would become part of his story.

Ironically, it was also there that food began opening another door.

Learning to Cook in Prison

Chef Reeky learned to cook while incarcerated.

For some people, that might simply become an interesting footnote in a chef’s biography.

For Reeky, it became part of something much bigger.

Cooking gave him another language.

Another weapon.

Another possibility.

He had already learned what it meant to survive environments where toughness, violence, and street credibility could become their own form of currency.

Now he was learning that his hands could create something instead of destroy something.

Those same hands could prepare food.

Build a business.

Feed a community.

Mentor a young man.

And possibly interrupt the cycle that once helped shape his own life.

His criminal record has since been expunged, but the lessons from that chapter have not disappeared.

He is using them.

Co-Parenting With the Streets

There is another phrase that captures what Chef Reeky is trying to address:

“Co-Parenting with the Streets.”

It is the title being developed for his TEDx concept, but it describes something much deeper.

Parents may be raising their children at home, but they are not always the only ones raising them.

The neighborhood is talking.

Social media is talking.

Friends are talking.

Music is talking.

The block is talking.

And sometimes the streets become another parent.

They teach their own lessons about manhood, respect, money, survival, loyalty, retaliation, and power.

Chef Reeky knows those lessons because he lived some of them.

That gives him something that cannot be manufactured in a classroom or pulled from a textbook.

Credibility.

When he talks to young men who are navigating the streets, he is not talking down to them.

He understands them.

He knows how quickly one decision can change the trajectory of a life because he has lived the consequences himself.

But his message is not simply, “Don’t do what I did.”

It is bigger than that.

It is about giving young people something else to choose.

Choose Your Weapon

The word weapon normally makes us think about something designed to injure.

Chef Reeky is challenging that definition.

What if your weapon is a chef’s knife?

A camera?

A microphone?

A business plan?

A paintbrush?

A laptop?

A trade?

A gift you have not discovered yet?

What if we could reach young people early enough to help them recognize that power does not have to come from destruction?

It can come from creation.

That idea is becoming part of the work Chef Reeky wants to do through CloudSafe Kitchen, the nonprofit initiative he has helped establish.

Food may be the entry point, but the larger mission is transformation.

The kitchen can become a classroom.

Mentorship can become intervention.

A chef can become the person who reaches a young man before the streets completely convince him that there is only one way to survive.

The People’s Chef

Maybe that is what makes the title “The People’s Chef” fit him so well.

It is not simply about feeding people.

It is about serving them.

Chef Reeky understands something many successful people eventually discover: surviving your own story creates an opportunity, but using that story to change somebody else’s life creates purpose.

His past does not have to disappear for his future to make sense.

In many ways, his past is exactly why his voice matters.

The young person standing on a Philadelphia corner may not immediately connect with a motivational speaker telling him what he should do.

But he might listen to somebody who can say:

I know.

I was there.

I made choices.

I paid for them.

And I found another way.

That is a different conversation.

From Hurting People to Healing People

Chef Reeky’s story is not about pretending the past never happened.

It is about what happens when a person decides the past will no longer have the final word.

He learned to survive.

He learned to cook.

He built businesses.

He became a chef.

He became an entrepreneur.

And now another chapter is unfolding.

Mentor.

Advocate.

Teacher.

Healer.

And maybe somewhere in Philadelphia there is a young man who needs to meet somebody like Chef Reeky before the streets finish teaching him their curriculum.

Because sometimes changing a life does not begin with a lecture.

Sometimes it begins over food.

Sometimes it begins in a kitchen.

Sometimes it begins when a man who has already walked down the wrong road turns around and says:

“I know where that road goes. Come with me. I can show you another way.”

Chef Reeky once learned how to hurt people.

Now he is learning how to heal them.

And perhaps the most powerful part of his story is that he intends to teach others how to do the same.
