The Book of Daniel

The Book of Daniel is about remaining faithful to God while living in a culture that does not honor Him. It shows that earthly kingdoms rise and fall, but God remains sovereign and His kingdom will last forever.

Main Sections

Daniel 1–6: Daniel’s life in Babylon

These chapters include:

• Daniel and his friends refusing the king’s food
• Nebuchadnezzar’s dream
• Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace
• Nebuchadnezzar’s pride and humiliation
• The handwriting on the wall
• Daniel in the lions’ den

Daniel 7–12: Daniel’s visions

These chapters contain prophetic visions concerning:

• The rise and fall of kingdoms
• Spiritual warfare
• Persecution of God’s people
• The coming Messiah
• Resurrection and final judgment
• God’s everlasting kingdom

Major Themes

1. God is sovereign

Kings may appear powerful, but God is ultimately in control.

“The most High ruleth in the kingdom of men.”

2. Faithfulness under pressure

Daniel and his friends would not compromise their relationship with God, even when threatened with death.

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself.”
—Daniel 1:8, KJV

3. Prayer and spiritual discipline

Daniel prayed consistently, even when prayer became illegal.

“He kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God.”

4. Courage without disrespect

Daniel honored earthly authorities but never placed their commands above God’s commands.

5. Pride leads to destruction

Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar learned that pride, arrogance, and failure to honor God bring judgment.

6. God protects His people

God did not always prevent His servants from entering trouble, but He remained with them in the fire, the lions’ den, captivity, and persecution.

7. God’s kingdom will prevail

Daniel’s prophecies point beyond temporary human governments to the everlasting reign of God.

“His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.”

You can live in Babylon without allowing Babylon to live in you.

Daniel teaches believers to remain prayerful, disciplined, humble, courageous, and faithful, even when society pressures them to compromise.
